The world's first cycling radar, Varia helps create a safer cycling environment by warning cyclists of vehicles approaching from behind up to 153 yards (140 meters). The radar tail light also warns approaching vehicles of a cyclist ahead. Works independently or integrates seamlessly with compatible Edge cycling computers. Edge computer or Varia head unit (each sold separately) can show multiple approaching vehicles and indicates the relative speed of approach and threat level.

The threat is real. That’s why getting some extra help knowing what’s sneaking up behind you is an important breakthrough. You already use caution and check over your shoulder, especially before making turns, but Varia radar gives you an important tool by watching behind you even when you aren’t.

The unit came with good mounting options. I paired it with the Garmin 820 explorer. I am really impressed with the way it functions. It actually detects cars around a bend that you cant see. It only detects cars that are approaching you from behind. No false alarms from parked cars or cars traveling away. The display shows multiple cars and depicts them getting closer. I do wish the audible alarm was louder. Getting rear ended by a car made me wish I purchased it sooner. I'm glad to be back on my bike and the Varia gives me some needed peace of mind.
After two weeks of use, I can't imaging riding with out it! I love knowing that a car is coming up behind me and how close it is to passing me. It paired quickly and easily to my 810 (with the latest firmware) and mounting to the seat post was simple. It seems very accurate and the only time I noticed that it missed any vehicles was during rush hour traffic with large group of slow moving cars very close together. Otherwise it's AWESOME. The changing in the light pattern notifies cars as they are approaching you. It's also helpful for cyclists behind you. My friend loves that she can tell a car is approaching and then check her mirror. The one downside is the light isn't very bright if a car isn't approaching. Make it hard for other cyclists to see you from behind.
I had my doubts about this prior to purchase, but was thoroughly impressed after running it for the last few months. It excels when riding solo, but even functions in a paceline which is unbelievable. You do get some false positives (just after cresting a hill or taking a tight turn) but I have yet to experience a failure to alert. Battery life is more than acceptable and I run this paired with my Edge 1000. It's like the perfect riding partner that always pays attention to traffic when I don't.
