CUSTOM BUILT FOR ADVENTURE Picture your perfect gravel/dirt/cyclocross bike. What comes to mind? Ask ten riders to describe their dream machine, and you’ll get ten different answers. That’s because there are so many variables at play: riding style, terrain, seasonal conditions, your local cyclocross scene. Bikes in this emerging category are put to so many different uses—from hardcore ’cross racing to gravel grinding to adventurous road riding—but the truth is most production cyclocross bikes are all quite similar. Higher bottom brackets, traditional geometry, overbuilt frame tubing—features born from the very specific demands of cyclocross. That’s why we created the all-new Z-Zero XD. Rather than follow the typical blueprint for a cyclocross bike, we set out to create a premium ride experience with nearly unlimited versatility. The name speaks to the DNA of this bike, and also its expanded capabilities. Its sibling, the Z-Zero, is a semi-custom carbon-fiber road bike that blends lightweight performance with made-to-order comfort and ride tuning. We started with that same precision engineering as the Z-Zero, then tweaked the geometry and added some features including disc brakes and extra clearance for tires up to 40mm wide. The result is this: a 100-percent made-in-the-USA carbon fiber bicycle that lets you expand your riding possibilities with zero compromises in ride quality. The first step we take before building your Z-Zero XD is gaining an understanding of exactly what you want from your bike. As important as this is for a road bike, it’s even more critical with the Z-Zero XD. Why? Well, think of this bike as a Swiss Army knife. It’s designed to do many things well, but based on your riding style and preferences, we can fine-tune the ride and dial in the performance features that matter most to you. Everything from the layup schedule of the carbon fiber to the tubing sizes and geometries are customizable for comfort and performance. When you factor in all the different tubing choices, there are essentially 16 effective sizes to give you the perfect fit. There’s no other carbon fiber frame in this category that can offer that level of comfort and performance. The Z-Zero XD also allows riders to choose details such as fork style (thru-axle or quick release), cable routing and ports. The rear brake hose is routed through the downtube and chainstay, allowing the rear disc brake caliper to be mounted inside the triangle. The rear dropouts are modular, compatible with either thru-axle or QR, and the frame also includes integrated fender mounts for a sleek setup in wet weather conditions. A ’cross bike means different things to different people. Tell us what it means to you, and we’ll build you the perfect bike.

OUR LATEST BENCHMARK: Z-ZERO DISC The last 10 years have seen a curious trend emerge in road bike design. Conservative policies by the governing bodies in professional cycling allow the technology available to amateur and recreational cyclists to far outpace the technology available to professional racers. The Z-Zero Disc is a great example of this unusual dichotomy. Featuring custom geometry, custom tube lay-up schedules, tubing made by Parlee north of Boston in Beverly, Massachusetts and the most advanced braking technology available, the Z-Zero Disc is a technical tour de force, a sheer joy to ride and still not legal for use in the Tour de France. Their loss is the Parlee riders gain. The Z-Zero Disc is 100% made to order, with the optimum performance characteristics and technical requirements perfectly met for each individual rider. From gravel epics to gran fondos, no road bike can match the versatility of the Z-Zero Disc.

OUR LATEST BENCHMARK: Z-ZERO In an industry where three years is considered the normal lifespan of a bicycle design, our Z1 has stood alone. A design so advanced that it still continues to be a benchmark, not just for customizable carbon bikes, but also a true reference point for all road bikes with performance aspirations. For over a decade we have relentlessly refined and perfected the Z1, to keep it compatible with the latest components and performance needs. This begs the question: why introduce the Z-Zero? There have been several technical developments in our stock bikes the past three years that have allowed us to increase performance and reduce weight but not compromises comfort or durability. Most of these innovations now found in our Z5i and Z5SLi were thought too difficult or expensive to feature in a customizable design but the Z-Zero eliminates any semblance of compromise. The Z-Zero includes all the modern performance features of a cutting-edge race bike with the ride tuning and custom fit originally only available in the Z1. Unlike 99.9% of modern road bikes, the Z-Zero is 100% made to order, with the optimum performance characteristics and technical requirements perfectly met for each individual rider. We simply do not start fabrication without knowing the riders needs perfectly. Available in 16 effective semi-custom sizes and full custom geometry, the Z-Zero simply fits a wider range of athletes than any other carbon road design.

The new Altum series from Parlee represents both types of progress. The modern tube shaping, the cutting-edge craftsmanship, even the Altum name all leave an immediate, unmistakable impression: this is something new. Yet at the same time, Altum remains true to the Parlee DNA. In fact, it’s a direct descendent of our benchmark Z series. And that means one thing—ride quality comes first. The lightest model in the Altum series starts with our highest modulus carbon fiber material. Through a combination of complex FEA (Finite Element Analysis) modeling and physical testing, we engineered a new layup process that places the high modulus carbon fiber in strategic areas to maximize weight reduction without negatively impacting strength or stiffness. One look at the new frame design reveals more pronounced tube shaping and transitions than those of the Altum’s Z series predecessors. The top tube and head tube flare out where they meet the head tube, as do the seat tube and down tube at the bottom bracket area. The result: a superlight frameset (750g frame/280g fork) with increased steering stiffness and pedaling efficiency. Of course, it’s not just about stiffness and weight. Much of the carbon layup strategy is based on Parlee’s goal of attaining a certain ride quality. The Altum is engineered to feel “snappy” when you stand up and sprint but have just enough compliance, especially in the rear triangle, to give it a smooth ride quality. All of the Altum models use a traditional round 31.6mm seatpost with a hidden, integrated binder, and we’re introducing a new specially designed composite post that weights just 185 grams and adds road-smoothing compliance. Other new features include increased tire clearance, from 23c to 28c, and a new fork design with an integrated carbon crown that helps increase stiffness while shaving 20 grams compared to Z5 SLi model fork. The internal cable routing is compatible with all major component groups, electronic or mechanical, and has been designed to make installation and service as simple as possible.

One look at the new ESX, and you know what this bike is about. It looks fast. And as the wind-tunnel data proves, it is fast. The most radical design ever created by Parlee took years to develop and can stand up against any other aero road bike on the market. Every road rider is drawn to the promise of more speed. Ride faster with less effort? Sure, who doesn’t want that? That’s the whole idea behind the “aero road” bike category. The question is, at what cost? What will you sacrifice to improve aerodynamic efficiency? Until now, the answer to that question has been pretty predictable. Ride quality gets sacrificed. As aero performance goes up, comfort goes down. Most aero road bikes put speed first, comfort last. Maybe pros can live with that on race day, but it’s less than ideal for an everyday road bike. That’s not a trade-off that Parlee was willing to make. They built their name on delivering superior ride quality. It’s what sets them apart. And it’s what led to the creation of the ESX. Several key technologies put this new bike in a class of its own. Its sleek, wind-cheating profile starts with a patented tube technology called Recurve. Bob Parlee’s background in designing and fabricating boats served this project well. His experience creating shapes and sections that move through fluid with optimal efficiency helped inform the design process of Recurve tubing. With its unique “fluted tail” shape, Recurve delivers the ideal blend of low drag and high torsional stiffness—along with road-smoothing comfort that is so often lacking in aero bikes. The other factor that was deemed critical from the start of the ESX project was weight. The typical way to improve aerodynamics is to create airfoils and added shapes—but a big part of the signature Parlee ride quality centers around a lightweight chassis. Adding material to create airfoils, or to shore up stiffness, wasn’t an option. In the end, after many prototypes and iterations, the design team was able to achieve its goal of hitting all the aerodynamic goals with a frame that still has excellent torsional stiffness and weighs less than 950 grams. All of the details on the ESX frameset contribute to its overall feel on the road. It features added clearance for larger 25-28c tires, which optimize speed and smoothness for all road surfaces. And its Recurve technology seatpost is available in 0 and 25mm setback sizes so you can dial in your position. Hidden cable routing for electronic or mechanical drivetrain systems comes standard, and the frame can accommodate internal Di2 batteries. The all-carbon PressFit 30 bottom bracket produces maximum pedaling stiffness and power transfer. The frame features direct mount, aerodynamic, integrated front and rear brakes. Finally, the ESX is available in five Flex-Fit sizes, with 10 unique stack-and-reach combinations for a perfect fit.
The Fourstroke is one of the very few full-suspension mountain bikes to win the Cross-Country World Championships. That alone sets it apart as an outstanding race bike. The combination of BMC's Big Wheel Concept (BWC) geometry and Advanced Pivot System (APS) suspension design makes for an incredibly fast and capable XC or Marathon race bike. If there is one category the Fourstroke belongs to, it is quite simply racing. Whether it's race day or an all day trail session with your buddies, Shimano's 2x11-speed XTR Di2 drivetrain brings pro-level shifting performance and push-button ease of use. An equally as impressive electronic Fox fork and shock offer 100mm of travel precisely when you need it. The BMC carbon wheels are stiff, lightweight, and — when dressed in Continental rubber — ready to fly through every turn. BMC carbon components and a Fizik saddle are the icing on this shiny, lightweight cake.
From the BC Bike Race to the Trans Alp to your local scene, Felt's Virtue FRD combines trail bike suspension with cross country weight and efficiency. To maximize huge days in the saddle, it starts off with a feathery carbon frame tied to a 130mm Felt Equilink suspension that smooths chatter and big hits with equal ease, yet still slingshots you out of corners with impressive efficiency. Up front is a 140mm-travel RockShox Pike RCT3 fork that demolishes techy sections so you can point and shred. On rolling duty are 29-inch Easton Haven carbon wheels with high-end Schwalbe tires that float through the chunder and roll over everything else. Shimano helps with the uphill chores and keeps the drivetrain shifting like a dream thanks to the electronically perfect 2x11-speed XTR Di2 drivetrain. And, powerful XTR brakes give you pinpoint control and modulation right at your fingertips. A Reverb dropper post, Race Face Next carbon bar, and carbon-railed WTB saddle let the Virtue FRD do what it does best — rack up a giant amount of singletrack while putting a huge grin on your face.

Parlee has expanded its aero road lineup with the all-new ESX-R. Built around the same design principles as the game-changing ESX, the newest model blends Parlee’s proven Recurve aero frame technology with uncompromising ride quality aimed at everyday road riding and racing. Featuring a unique fluted tail shape, Recurve delivers low drag and high torsional stiffness, along with a smooth, compliant ride quality that’s often lacking in aero road bikes. The original ESX design, introduced in 2013 after several years of development and testing, was proven in wind-tunnel testing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to have less aerodynamic drag than key competing aero bikes (see aero data). And compared to the Parlee Z5 road bike, the ESX-R can save riders between 57 and 95 seconds over a distance of 40km. Testing results and data speak for themselves, but where the new ESX-R truly shines is the way that it feels when you’re out on the road. In the effort to achieve certain aerodynamic goals, many aero road bikes make compromises in the less tangible factors such as cornering, climbing and overall handling characteristics. Not so with the ESX-R. One of the added benefits of Recurve tubing design—which is most evident around the areas of the frame that are exposed directly to the wind around the head tube, top tube and down tube—is that it helps produce a quiet ride. Overall, great care was put toward developing aero solutions that stay true to Parlee’s high standards of light weight and exceptional ride quality. Handcrafted with strategically placed blends of carbon fiber material, the new ESX-R frame weighs 1025 grams. The fork, which also plays a major role in aero performance, weighs 370 grams. The ESX-R’s unique seatpost design, which extends the Recurve shape seamlessly through the seat tube and seatpost, further boosts aero performance and is available with a 0 or 25mm offset that lets riders dial in their position. Hidden cable routing for electronic or mechanical drivetrain systems comes standard, and the ESX-R frame can accommodate internal Di2 batteries. The all-carbon PressFit 30 bottom bracket produces maximum pedaling stiffness and power transfer. The frame features direct mount, aerodynamic, integrated front and rear brakes, and provides enough clearance for 23-28mm tires. As with the ESX, the ESX-R is available in five Flex-Fit sizes, with 10 unique stack-and-reach combinations for a perfect fit.

Specialized's S-Works Venge ViAS Disc eTap is more than just a bike. When the first Venge launched, it changed aerodynamics, but now, we've designed a complete speed system. Nearly every single piece of it was redesigned from the ground up. Every facet was examined, and the result is a bike with supreme braking and a 116-second advantage, compared to the Tarmac, over 40km. Every tube, trailing edge, and design cue was made for speed. It's also Rider-First Engineered to ensure that every frame size experiences uniform performance, plus front-end stiffness was increased by 30% over the Tarmac. As one of the first elements to hit the wind, Specialized realized that most stem and bar offerings cause too much aerodynamic drag. To achieve the best solution, while also interfacing with the frame, a negative 17-degree stem proved to be the best option. Most riders aren't flexible enough to ride in such an aggressive position, though, so Specialized designed the Aerofly bars with a positive rise that replicates your most efficient position. This resulted in a bike that has next-to-no visible cables. Of course, this disc iteration changes the game with undeniable stopping power without any penalty to the aerodynamic profile, so you get powerful braking without any sacrifice. The SRAM eTap, 11-speed shifters are the future of shifting. They communicate wirelessly with the front and rear derailleurs for a ground-breaking level of performance, while offering new, intuitive shift capabilities. Then there's the featherweight carbon Roval CLX 64 wheels that amplify the performance of this race rig. So when it comes to sprinting to the line, this Venge refuses to be outdone.

The tech fest continues with fantastically light carbon RaceFace Next SL cranks and feathery XX disc brakes with carbon levers. We're not done yet. You've also got a carbon bar, and seatpost to coalesce this speed monster into a ride that will have you leaving your limits behind!
Race day or training day, Felt's IA 2 gives you an unfair advantage over the competition. Taking full advantage of Felt's wind tunnel expertise, the heart of this triathlon bike is an exceptionally aero, high-modulus carbon frame with deep-section frame tubes and Felt's own integrated Dagger stem and fork to pierce the wind. Felt provides a pair of their own carbon deep-section rims and fast-rolling TTR tires to relentlessly trim down your ride time. Shimano's flawless Ultegra Di2 drivetrain is used to exceptional effect, with rapid, crisp shifts from the extensions or the bullhorns. And, since a comfortable rider is a strong rider, the IA 2 comes spec'd with a supportive ISM Tri saddle, a completely adjustable Felt Aero Tri seatpost, and Felt's carbon Dagger Ultimate base bar and f-bend extensions.

Hidden, internal Di2 or Campagnolo EPS V2 wiring is also available. Each year, after logging thousands of miles on bikes from all across the globe, the editors of Bicycling Magazine select one bike as the ultimate, cost-is-no-object dream bike. The Parlee Z1 is that bike.
Careful. A quick spin around the block might turn into an all-consuming love affair. Cervelo's R5 is built with one of the lightest, stiffest, most comfortable frames in the world. The secret lies in Cervelo's Squoval tubes, massive BBright bottom bracket, and super-thin seatstays. This all culminates in a smooth ride with the speed, agility, and power to win Grand Tour stages and spring classics alike. Cervelo's tapered carbon fork provides precise cornering, superb stability over rough surfaces, and instantaneous response. Shimano's 11-speed Dura-Ace Di2 drivetrain provides blissfully smooth and accurate push-button shifts while keeping the weight as low as possible. You also get HED Ardennes Plus LT wheels and components from FSA. Whether you're cruising up sweet roads high in the mountains or out for the weekend group ride, this all-rounder ensures comfort, efficiency, and above all, blistering speed.
